...conceptually, patterns we form in our daily lives - with ourselves, with others, with objects, sounds, + things that we see - + how those patterns can be translated into a work of art is of great interest to me. my use of repetition is a reflection of this fascination. the repetition apparent in my work can make patterns visible to the viewer.

i am philosophically + aesthetically drawn to clarity, organization, precision, virtuosity, + accuracy. travelling through space at quick speeds is extremely gratifying + important to me. i am interested in the duration of time, i.e., how long can a dancer do something, + intensity, i.e., speed + effort, by which we can move our arms + legs. i aim to find stillness in continuous motion... a kind of stability, a state of stasis, amidst movement that occurs at fast speeds. i am also intrigued by energy communicated by active performers to (seemingly) passive viewers. exploring horizontal + vertical spaces intrigues me. i investigate these elements in the dances that i make.

i believe that we dancers should use our intellectual capabilities to the same extent + dedication that we use our bodies. in this way, i am curious, not about virtuosity that promotes a duality between rationality + physicality, but a virtuosity that actively binds mind + body.

i can't take for granted that the viewer knows me/my work, or doesn't know me/my work when i make a dance/performance piece. i can't make any assumptions, but must assume everything. i have to start at the beginning, but first have to de-find the beginning, + then find the end before i actualize the beginning. (the "experience" reveals aesthetic identification processes - other/otherness - the piece reveals itself.)

in my work: the dancers create the space; the dancers are the space. the dancers are Beings-in the space + Beings-for the space; anonymous bodies without emotional, sexual, or social connotations. the dancers become simultaneously extremely neutral + extremely active portraits of movement...
