monica mark was born in london, england + raised in new york city. her first experience with dance began at the age of five with tap + ballet + by age 13 she was teaching tap classes as part of an after school program in brooklyn, new york. monica's serious dance training started when she enrolled at the city college of new york. it was her first introduction to modern dance (horton technique), jazz + choreography. whilst taking classes at city college monica also danced + performed with finnish dancer + choreographer oona harrenen at various venues including the finnish consulate. later on she would continue her training at the hunter college of new york, where she also studied improvisational techniques, african dance + folk dance.monica has always enjoyed dancing + performing but her true passion lies within choreography. being heavily influenced by the horton technique her style can be seen as sharp, percussive modern based movement with elements of west african dance, hip hop + her own personal quirky style. monica finds inspiration for her choreography in all walks of life including music, photography, people + film. monica's choreography has been performed in new york city, prague, london + san francisco + she has been named "one of the top ten choreographers to watch for in the Bay area" by sjDANCEco. monica is the artistic director + choreographer for U Dance Electra.
